Dr James Howard is a Consultant Cardiologist and Clinical Academic who believes the best care combines technical excellence with patient-centred decision making. He treats patients at OneWelbeck, Hammersmith and Charing Cross Hospital.
He studied Clinical Medicine at Trinity College, the University of Cambridge, and completed a BA in Natural Sciences. His academic training includes an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship, Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Training Fellowship, an NIHR Clinical Lectureship and a BHF Intermediate Clinical Research Fellowship, alongside postgraduate qualifications in Clinical Trials at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He has secured over £1 million in research funding.
He led the SAMSON trial in the New England Journal of Medicine, which clarified statin side effects and how to support patients who struggle with treatment. He also develops AI software for cardiac MRI to make scans faster and more accurate, work recognised with a global prize from Facebook and Microsoft.
